This is my cousin Jared. He is 9 years old, and was diagnosed as severe to profoundly deaf around 2 years of age. He now wears cochlear implants, surgically implanted electronic devices, to hear. What I find most interesting about my cousin’s condition is that while cochlear implants apparently convey musical pitch quite poorly, Jared absolutely adores music and loves to dance. When I watch him move I can’t help but be amazed at his sense of rhythm and how well he understands the music. To me, it doesn’t seem that cochlear implants diminishes his appreciation for music in the least.
In case you can’t tell, he loves Justin Bieber. My cousin sent me this video yesterday and I just had to share it with you all. His parents seriously need to put him in dance classes. And make him a YouTube channel. Yeah, I said it.
